I live just outside of Nashville, in the bend of the Harpeth River. (The mighty Harpeth, as I like to call it.) It's a good place to think, to listen, to watch, and to be aware of nature. As it says in the lyrics, there are indeed secret songs being sung... if you pay attention. I wrote this song on New Year's Day, thinking about time passing, changes, etc. - Steve H. |
1) The river keeps flowin' / every day and night
Another year goin' / ah, but that's all right
Nothin' ever changes / nothing stays the same
It's just a brand-new picture / in an ancient frame
But if you listen real close / you can hear that hum
And it'll make you shiver
Here in the bend of the river
2) Hear that old screech owl / hear that bobcat wail
Out here in the wild / life's either pass or fail
But if you pay attention / secret songs are being sung
Words of wisdom / in a long-lost tongue
Just listen real close / and you'll hear that hum
And it'll make you shiver
Out here in the bend of the river
bridge: Crescent moon hangin' / in a haint blue sky
Ghost of a breeze / goes whistlin' by
Just stand still / and watch that river flow
You'll find out everything / you need to know
3) Fire on the mountain / smoke in the air
If you're lookin' for answers / well, they're everywhere
But if you listen real close / you're gonna hear that hum
And it'll make you shiver
Here in the bend of the river.
