A lot of train songs have been written over the years. I've even written a couple myself. My house outside of Nashville is maybe a half-mile from train tracks, and freight trains go by a few times every day. You can always hear them at night, when it's really quiet. One night, in the wee hours, I was lying in bed listening to a train passing by; the lonesome whistle, the sound of the train going down the track, etc. I channeled my younger and more restless self to write a song about someone who's got the urge to go somewhere else. (These days, I'm perfectly content to stay where I am, but I remember that young guy.) - Steve H. |
1)
It's the middle of the night / and I can hear that lonesome
whistle blow
It's
a train headin' south / exactly where / I don't know
And I've got this
urge for goin' / it's something I can't quite explain
No, I can't tell you why / I just know that I / feel like gettin' on
that train
chorus:
I feel like gettin' on that train / I'm gonna climb
aboard and ride
I won't have a destination / I'll just let that train
decide
2)
Lyin' here / in the dark / I can hear that train rumblin' by
I
bet that it's the same one / that made ol' Hank so
lonesome he could cry
And that old song
about starlight on the rails / is rattlin' through my brain
You know, it just might be / I need a change of scenery / but I feel like gettin' on that
train
chorus:
I feel like gettin' on that train / Gonna climb aboard and ride
I won't have a destination / I''m gonna let that train decide
3)
Now, lately I've been thinkin' / it might be time
/ to make a move
Been
around this town for so long / I've got nothin' left to prove
I don't have much
to lose / and I've got the whole wide world to gain
So,
one night soon / by the light of a silvery moon / you'll see me
gettin' on that train
I feel like
gettin' on that train.
