This is the fourth song in what I like to call The Mysterious Ways Saga, which began when
I wrote a song called "Mysterious Ways" back in the year 2000.  I never intended to write a Part Two, let alone the others that have followed... but I've now written and recorded six
of them. This one has a little something for everyone: the Devil, counterfeiting, grapes in a vineyard, and a party in Chicken Alley (which is a real place.) - Steve H.

1)  She was somewhere east of nowhere / with the Devil at the wheel
He said, "I'm lookin' for a soul / would you like to make a deal?"
She said, "Get behind me, Satan / you're a little late
You know I sold that sucker / back in 1988"

The Devil shook his head and sighed / and said, "It's been one of those days"
Ah, the Lord works / in mysterious ways

2)  I was tired of workin' / for a nickel and a dime
When I heard that counterfeitin' / was The Gentleman's Crime
So I got some special paper / and a bunch of copper plates
And I whipped me up some currency / of these United States

Now I laugh when I hear them say / that crime never pays
'Cause I know the Lord works / in mysterious ways

3)  I stumbled into Asheville / lookin' for a place to eat
And down in Chicken Alley / there was a party in the street
The buildings there were painted / red and blue and green
And they were dancin' on the tables / like you've never seen

Drinkin' champagne out of paper cups / for forty nights and forty days
Well, the Lord works / in mysterious ways

4)  I've been toilin' in the vineyard / but I haven't seen the Lord
Been tramplin' out the vintage / where the grapes of life are stored
I've got one foot in Heaven / one foot in Hell
And there really ain't much difference / as far as I can tell

But don't you worry about me / I'm just going through a phase
You see, the Lord works / in mysterious ways

"Mysterious Ways, Part Four" appears on the Steve Haggard CD
