MYSTERY STREET

"Mystery Street" is about a big white house. It's a real house, in a real place, although not all of the details are strictly factual. For instance, the real house has three gables, but the house in the song has seven gables. That's poetic license, I guess. Also, there may or may not be "a ghost or two". Maybe there are no ghosts at all, maybe there are three or four. That's in the eye of the beholder.  Or in this case, in the ear of the listener. -Steve H.

1)  I've been workin' on a song / about a place I've never been

Except in my dreams / over and over again
It's on a tree-lined street / in the quiet part of town
Steamboat whistle off the river / is just about the only sound
I'll be headin' there tomorrow / so if you'd like to meet

Come see me on Mystery Street

2)  It's a big white house / built in Eighteen Ninety-Five
It's got a soul of its own / you'd almost swear that it's alive
It's got seven gables / and a ghost or two
But don't mess with them / and they won't bother you
I'll be packin' my bags tonight / and beatin' my retreat
Down to Mystery Street

3)  When the moon is full / we'll get out our guitars
And drink some wine / beneath a blanket of stars
We'll sing the old sad songs / play some down-home blues
Hell, we might even tell / Tchaikovsky the news
Where the clubs and the diamonds / and the spades and the hearts / all meet

I'm talkin' 'bout Mystery Street

4)  I've been thinkin' too much / but that's nothin' new
For better or worse / that's just what I do
I've got it all figured out / or maybe I don't
I'm gonna win you over / or maybe I won't
Either way, darlin' / I'll keep this short but sweet

Come up and see me sometime / on Mystery Street
