While sitting outside at a little winery here in Tennessee, I got to thinking about vineyards; both real vineyards and metaphorical ones. People have been writing about wine and vine- yards since biblical times at least, and they're pretty good subject matter. My original idea was to write a Jimmy Reed-style blues, with kind of a lazy and loping feel. It wound up being a bit more hard-edged, but that's the way things go sometimes. - Steve H. |
1) Walkin' through the vineyard / lookin' out across the fields
I'm walkin' through the vineyard / lookin' out across the fields
Time goes by / and still the vine / its ancient ruby yields
2) Let's fill up the glasses / and I'll propose a toast, my friend
Let's fill up the glasses / and I'll propose a toast, my friend
We'll drink to the beginning / and we'll drink to the end
3) The hours pass so slowly / but the years go flyin' by
Well, the days they pass so slowly / but the years go flyin' by
Turn around / there goes a lifetime / in the blink of an eye
4) I wish I could turn water / turn it into wine
Oh, I wish I could turn water / turn it into wine
Rustle up some loaves and fishes / now wouldn't that be fine?
"Vineyard Blues" appears on the Steve Haggard album Haint Blue.
