The title of
my "Make Your Move" CD comes from a line in the chorus of All
Up To You...
so I guess that makes it the album's title song. It was written in Munich, Germany. I had a few days off during a tour, and was hangin' out in Munich, where I have a couple of good friends. (This song was written about one of them, who was pretty much being destroyed by her defeatist attitude towards life, and wasting her many talents.) It was a particularly beautiful day in June, and I spent much of it walking around the city, writing this song in my head, singing it to myself over and over as I added sections, altered lines, etc. On one hand, I was sad about my friend's situation and felt sympathetic; on the other hand, I was really frustrated that she wouldn't help herself, and wanted to whack her over the head -- in a helpful way -- with a bit of reality. I like both the song and the message. Interestingly, when the CD came out, she immediately asked me if the song was about her. I said that it was... and not only wasn't she mad, she was pleased. (She didn't change, though.) -Steve H. |
1. Well, if you're thinkin' / that
life is passin' you by
You've got two choices / one is them
is sit and cry
The other / is to get up and take
a stand
If you've got a point to prove /
you'd better make your move, my friend
chorus: You can waste away
your life with talk / or you can pick up your feet and walk
Blame your troubles on everyone else
/ or do somethin' about it for yourself
You can weep and wail and tear your
hair / curse the sky and say, "life ain't fair"
But if you want to make your dreams
come true / it's all up to you
2. Now everybody / has got their cross
to bear
Bad luck and heartache / everybody
gets their share
But this life / is the only one you've
got
And I'm tellin' you the hard cold
truth now / like it or not
repeat chorus
bridge: You've got a problem
/ you need to stand up and face it.
Good advice / you'd better learn
how to take it
A bad habit / you know you'd better
break it
And nobody / can do it for you
repeat chorus.
"All Up
To You" appears on the Steve Haggard CD,
