I first heard
Black
Dog when I was a teenager -- on an album by Koerner, Ray & Glover
--
and immediately loved the song. I learned it on the autoharp, which I used to play back then, but never performed it. Many years later, while choosing songs for my "Make Your Move" album, I remembered good ol' Black Dog. I hadn't done it for a long time, but it all fell into place right away. (There's no autoharp on it, alas... but otherwise it sounds fine.) I wasn't sure of all the words, so I added some new ones here and there. -Steve H. |
1. Well, I was born in California
/ I live in Tennessee
But any ol' place that I hang my
hat / looks like home to me
chorus: Well, you call me a
dog / when I'm gone now, baby
I'm a black dog / when I'm gone
But when I get back / with a hundred-dollar
bill
It's "Daddy, where you been / so
long?"
2. Well, my daddy taught me
to gamble / he said to bet on the deuce and the trey
Now any time I see my last dollar
down / I bet on that ol' deuce and trey
repeat chorus
3. Well, I've rolled my dice in Cuba
/ played my cards in Spain
And any time I see that last deal
go down / I hop on that ol' fast train
repeat chorus
4. Well, I've travel this wide
world over / doin' what i do
No matter where I go / honey, don't
you know / I always come home to you
repeat chorus.
"Black Dog"
