I like straightforward acoustic songs such as "Miles To Go Before I Sleep", but I don't write 'em very often. (Who knows why? ) It's got kind of a half-bluegrass, half-Woody Guthrie feel. I remember that I wrote it really fast, except for some reason there was part of one line that I was never satisfied with. I played the song for my friend Teddy Glenn, and he came up with a good suggestion that I wound up using. I don't remember which line it was, though. -Steve H. |
1. With many a long and winding road
/ has stretched before me and behind me
I'm leavin' dust a-flyin' as I go
Over the hills and plains I ride
/ east and west of the Great Divide
Through the summer's heat / and the
blindin' snow
Towering mountains may lay ahead
/ but I'll climb 'em all / no matter how steep
And I'll cross every ragin' river
/ no matter how deep
'Cause I've got miles to go before
I sleep
chorus: Miles to go before
I sleep
I've got bridges to burn / pages
to turn / and promises to keep
And I don't always have the time
/ to look before I leap
'Cause I've got miles to go / before
I sleep
2. This world is full of wondrous
things / sights to see and songs to sing
And we'd better do it while we can
That clock is tickin' every day /
all these things must pass away
And we might
not pass this way again
There's a time to live / and a time
to die / a time to laugh / and a time to weep
And brother, you can keep on talkin'
/ but talk is cheap
And I've got miles to go before I
sleep
repeat chorus.
"Miles To
Go Before I Sleep" appears on the Steve Haggard CD,
