Anyone who's
ever spent "quality time" out on the road playing music for a living will
recognize the world depicted in What Town Is This Anyway?
I wrote it in my younger (and wilder) days, back in the 1980s. As was often
the case, we were playing one night here, one night there, and losing track
of just about everything. The world of motels, pool halls, clubs, late-night
diners, etc. One afternoon, we were driving around some little town, looking
for a laundromat so we could wash our clothes before that night's gig --
ah, the glamour of showbiz, my friends! -- and our bass player turned to
me and
asked me the question that became the title of this song. - Steve H. |
1. Well, I've been out on the road
/ singin' my songs and diggin' for gold
Rantin' and roarin' / and stayin'
up late
The future looks just like the past
/ and every town looks just like the last
And sometimes it's not easy / keepin'
them straight
chorus: So tell me, baby /
who am I ?
And how'd I get here? / and what's
today?
What's your name? / is this hello
or goodbye?
And what town is this anyway ?
2. Well, I've been spendin' my time
/ singin' my heart out for nickels and dimes
Missin' my baby / and thinkin' about
her
Pool halls and Holiday Inns / that's
the world I'm livin' in
And sometimes it all just seems like
/ one big blur
repeat chorus
3. 1. Well, I've been takin' up space
/ talkin' in circles and runnin' in place
Gettin' in
trouble / every now and then
Makin' promises
I can't keep / too much drinkin' and not enough sleep
And tomorrow
/ I've gotta do it all over again
repeat chorus.
