In pretty much all of the many genres of music that I like and listen to -- country, blues, rock 'n' roll, R&B, swing, etc. -- there's a long (and glorious) tradition of those bar-room, out-on-the-town, acting-somewhat-irresponsibly type songs. The creeping disease called political correctness, along with the sanitizing/sterilizing/neutering of most radio these days, has mostly killed off that kind of song. "Whenever You're Ready", though, fits right into the category I described. It's partly tongue-in-cheek, of course. (Partly.) -Steve H. |
1. Got two hundred
dollars I'm ready to spend
And a candle
I'm fixin' to burn at both ends
And you look
like the kind of girl / who could help me out
So come a little
closer / and I'll show you what I'm talkin' about
2. Got a whole
lot to say on the tip of my tongue
But words can
wait, 'cause the night is young
And don't laugh,
darlin' / I think it's love at first sight
And on my honor
/ I'm gonna treat you right
3. Come, on
baby / I'm thinkin this
Is a chance
we can't afford to miss
And you can
trust me, honey / 'cause I wouldn't lie
So whenever
you're ready / baby, so am I
chorus:
Whenever you're ready / whenever you're ready
Honey, we'll
have a ball / together
And together
/ honey, we'll do it all
And when we
get through paintin' the town
We just might
burn the damn thing down
Whenever you're
ready / I'm ready to roll
4. Got a few
bad habits / and two ex-wives
But I've still
got seven of my nine lives
And baby, I'm
willin' / to try most anything twice.
So slide on
over / I swear I'll treat you nice
5. Well, I've
got a sure-fire recipe
Darlin', just
mix you and me
Add some wine
/ and turn up the heat just right
Serve over
satin sheets / by candlelight
repeat chorus.
