One of the
things that first got me to love country was those sad songs of Hank Williams,
Gary Stewart, George Jones, Webb Pierce and others. They were always full of heartache, and often there was a whole lot of drinkin' goin' on. (This was in the good old days before country music was sanitized, of course.) "Wine And Memories" is in that 'grand tradition'... and it's pretty sad. The hotel in the song is long gone, but the memories remain. - Steve H. |
1. I'm here alone tonight / where
we once used to meet
In this rundown hotel / here on this
downtown street
The wine is red / and I'm just feelin'
blue
This bed and my world both seem /
empty without you
chorus: And here I am again
/ in Room 429
Starin' back at four gray walls /
drinkin' too much wine
Dreamin' about the way / things used
to be
I'm drunk on wine / and memories
2. I don't know when or how / or why
/ our love went bad
Oh, I just know that I / have never
felt so sad
They say that wine / can't help a
man forget
But I'm on my second bottle / and
it isn't workin' yet
chorus: And here I am again
/ in Room 429
Starin' back at four gray walls /
drinkin' too much wine
Dreamin' about the way / things used
to be
I'm drunk on wine / and memories.
